Immediately recognizable as a Poulat piece, the snake features tightly coiled silver, emulating the snake's body, and ending with a slide in clasp that is fashioned into the snake's head and tail, studded with natural turquoise in Poulat's well known crimp bezel settings. A very versatile piece, the necklace can be worn with the clasp in the front, at the side, or in the back for different looks. A stunning piece, weighty at 162 grams of sterling silver. Matilde Poulat, who often signed her work "MATL", introduced her jewelry in 1934 in Mexico City.Poulat, who studied at the prestigious San Carlos Academy in Mexico City, found much of her inspiration in the early Mixtec designs as well as from traditional Mexican folk art. Matl's style is very unique and her use of combining turquoise, coral, and amethyst is visually exciting. Poulat, who passed away in 1960, taught her nephew, Ricardo Salas, the art of this jewelry making and Salas worked with Matl until her death and continued on in the work.
