Please note that large (34x18mm) very colorful opals, as this one, are becoming extremely rare. He passed on in Taxco at age 90. At a young age he worked for William Spratling and later started his own shop in 1941 called "Antonio". His designs were greatly influenced by William Spratling and designer/artist Valentin Vidaurreta. This is a beautiful, large pendant with a gorgeous opal in it. It weighs 42g and measures 1 5/8" x 1" without the bail, the bail is 1/2 (the opal is about 34x18mm and bezel set). The solid/thick opal is very colorful and has very nice fire.... I see reds, yellows, greens, and more colors in sunlight. The last picture of the stone was taken without sunlight and there is still plenty of fire to this opal! The stone has lots of opal and very little matrix, as well.
The pendant is a locket design with a rope border, when it is open you can see the backside of the opal on one side and the artist's hallmark on the other. The weight of the piece keeps the locket closed when wearing.
Please note there is a surface fracture across the top of the opal, not deep or wide, but it can be felt when running your nail over the top. This is not uncommon in an old opal as this. Please see pictures of side views of the pendant so that you can see the line is not at all on either side of the stone, which sits up quite a bit. So this fracture is only on the surface.
I can't see anything or feel anything when I run my nail over those edges. Basically, the fracture doesn't continue down the sides of the stone, which is very good. In excellent condition for vintage and hallmarked: Antonio, Taxco, Eagle 17, Made in Mexico, Silver, YY, 514. "YY" was often the mark used for necklaces or pendants. Pineda often used 970 silver or higher.
This pendant is circa post 1953. A wonderful addition to anyone's collection! Please contact me first with a brief explanation. Item needs to be in its original condition and in its original inside packaging.
I would never be dishonest with a listing and I try to be very detailed, but mistakes can happen. Thank you for your understanding. All items come from a smoke free home. Rings are sized to the nearest 1/4 size with a metal sizing mandrel. I don't recommend polishing pieces with patina, since it may cause damage.
